Meet The ORR Design Team

Gary Orr
35 YEARS EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
Principal & Director of Design
Buildings, Interiors, and Landscape Architecture
ASLA, AIA assoc., AIBD, LEED AP Homes
Gary Orr, ‘the Visionary,’ is known for bold, transformative ideas that reimagine how spaces connect and inspire. With over 35 years of experience spanning architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, horticulture, fine art, and construction, Gary has a rare ability to conceptualize projects in three dimensions, crafting every detail into a seamless and cohesive whole. His boundary-pushing designs challenge conventions, energizing clients, builders, and the ORR Design team to create extraordinary results.
Gary’s artistic, inventive and curious journey began in early childhood- building sandpile and wood block cities, tinkering in his father’s shop, scale model building, and other imaginative projects. He intuitively saw the abstract design character of nature’s landscape while hiking in the Sierra’s as an Eagle Scout. Enrolled in private art lessons for nearly a decade, he mastered drawing, sculpture, and oil painting, earning a first-place prize in a City-wide art competition at age 13. By 14, he had already built a 40’ x 40’ air-conditioned greenhouse in the backyard to propagate exotic plants—an early sign of his inventive spirit. These formative experiences shaped his design philosophy, merging artistic vision with technical precision.
Before founding ORR Design Office in 1996, Gary taught design theory at Los Rios College, where he shared his passion for blending innovation and practicality with a new generation of designers. His firsthand construction experience as a craftsman further deepens his understanding of how materials, systems, and ideas come together in the real world. Gary owned a small construction company early in his career, working in concrete, grading, metal, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades—knowledge that informs his designs to this day.
Gary’s work has earned over 25 national and international design awards and has been featured in publications like Architectural Digest, Sunset Magazine, and Dwell. A resolute traveler, Gary draws inspiration from experiences around the world, from the glaciers of Iceland to the prairies of Kansas, infusing each project with a sense of place and meaning.
Q&A with Gary
What part of your design process would surprise clients?
I immerse myself in my clients’ vision, much like an actor inhabits a character. It is their dream, but it is also my vision, filtered through their goals and aesthetic preferences. This collaboration creates designs that are both deeply personal and creatively inspired.
As a seasoned traveler and hiker, which places have inspired you the most?
Everywhere I have traveled has influenced me. Climbing Kilimanjaro, walking through bombed-out villages in Croatia, exploring historic gardens in China, witnessing the rawness of nature in Iceland, or exploring ancient cities like Petra in Jordan or biking through European villages—these experiences each add to my design “toolbox.” They give me a broader perspective and help me craft spaces that resonate on a deeper level.

Q&A with William
What was it like living in China?
It was eye-opening. The mix of ancient traditions and modern urban chaos was fascinating. Being so visibly different, I gained a new perspective on culture and identity.
If not an architect, what would you be?
A National Geographic photojournalist. I am captivated by how cultures differ and what connects us, it is the same curiosity that drives my architectural designs.

Lowai Ghaly
7 YEARS EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION

Lowai, ‘the Emergent designer,’ represents the future generation of design, bringing advanced technology, cultural insight, and firsthand construction experience to ORR Design. A graduate of San Francisco’s Academy of Art, Lowai is enthusiastic about blending creative problem solving with timeless design principles.
Growing up in Egypt near the Nile, he was surrounded by rich architectural history, which shaped his perspective. In America, he embraced a design approach that harmonizes culture, innovation, and the needs of modern living. Lowai’s expertise in advanced software and precision tools ensures every detail of ORR Design’s projects is thoughtfully executed.
When not immersed in design, Lowai spends time with his young family, honoring his roots as a first-generation American and applying the same curiosity and determination that defines his career.
Q&A with Lowai
How has your background influenced your approach to design?
Growing up in Egypt, I saw how architecture can reflect history and culture—or fail to. Moving to America taught me to embrace innovation while respecting context. This balance shapes everything I design.
What did assembling IKEA cabinets teach you about design?
It taught me precision and problem-solving. Each project had unique challenges, and I learned how details matter and how to adapt when things do not go as planned.

Q&A with Bob
When virtually building a project, do you feel like you are back at the job site?
Absolutely. Building virtually allows me to explore the project in-depth, like I am walking around the site and solving issues before they arise. It is exciting to blend old-school craftsmanship with innovative technology.
How does mountain biking influence your approach?
It is all about navigating challenges. Riding trails pushes me to stay focused, adapt to the terrain, and enjoy the journey—skills that carry over into design and problem-solving.

In his downtime, Don transformed a mid-century library into a modern family home, blending traditional architecture with contemporary flair.
Q&A with Don
How does architecture influence your graphic design approach?
I learned from ORR Design that good design centers on the user’s experience. This principle applies equally to graphic and architectural design, where form meets function.
What inspired you to turn a library into a home?
It was a blank canvas with mid-century bones—a perfect match for my love of blending the modern with the traditional. With input from the ORR team, we created something unique and personal.

Q&A with Mary
What excites you about construction accounting?
I love seeing a project take shape and knowing I played a role in its success. Managing budgets in construction is uniquely challenging but incredibly rewarding.
You’ve become an AirBnB owner, what inspired you to do this?
My husband and I have this wonderful country property and decided to build a rental cottage on a beautiful spot in the far corner. We love being hosts and making the tiny details of the space and the guest experience extra special.

Taking a flat drawing and transforming it into a realistic, immersive model is incredibly satisfying. Gary’s attention to detail, especially to landscapes, has elevated my work—it is all about perfection.
How has living in South America shaped your perspective?
Uruguay’s cosmopolitan culture taught me the importance of balancing tradition with modernity. Life there is fast paced but also deeply connected to family and community, which inspires my approach to design.

Knot Here
AT LEAST 10 YEARS EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
PROJECT ARCHITECT OR SIMILAR
Knot, “The Project Manager” is not quite here yet! But, from what we know, Knot will arrive early and is extremely organized and will bring an enduring insight to the office’s growing dream team of enthusiastic design and architecture pros. Knot is known for tireless energy, intimate knowledge of custom buildings, site development and things made of concrete, wood, glass and steel and how they all fit together like a fine musical instrument. As a natural leader, Knot is a self-starter and intrinsically motivated to build teams and connections inside and outside our office. And, the client interface skills of Knot are stellar as a liaison to the needs and goals of our clients who are dreamers, bold thinkers and demanding perfectionists.
Knot is inspired by the potential as a perfect fit for ORR’s team, and does not hesitate to reach out and connect because life is short.
What knot is your favorite and why?
Well, I learned in Scouts back when I was just a kid about the Bowline. It’s my favorite knot. I can tie it with one hand. It’s the strongest knot too. It’s used to hold trees, tie up boats, for climbing, on ranches and even search and rescue. I love showing off my knot knowledge to the crews on a construction site. I also like the high-tech aspect of rope and how something so small can be strong, resilient and tough.
You’re known for your sense of humor. Why “knock-knock” jokes about the architect that designed the front entry door?
People with a great sense of humor are known to be smart and connect with people, they are creative, adaptable, playful and optimistic. Architects are sometimes too serious but at the same time they can be highly animated and thrilled when someone asks them about reflections in a window from clouds that look like elephants. So, knock knock jokes are my go to place when I’m stressed about deadlines and eating the same lunch everyday for a week.
