In this edition, we are spotlighting architect Will Hastie, a long-time member of our office staff. Will brings a long career of international architectural experience with interests in historic architecture and culture. His diverse background enriches our project designs and approaches. Outside the office, Will is an active theatrical set designer and creative collaborator for highly acclaimed local community theatre company.

For the past seven years, Will has been commissioned by Apollo Arts to design sets for numerous theatrical productions by local foothill community theater. Over the years, he has mastered the balance of creative expression and functional restraint—ensuring that each set enhances the performance without overshadowing it.

Unlike residential or landscape design, theatrical set design must remain secondary to the play. Through close collaboration with Apollo Arts administrators, directors, and the construction crew, each set evolves through a process of careful listening, refinement, and technical problem-solving. His work reflects a deep understanding of storytelling, atmosphere, and the invisible role of design in theatrical immersion.

To bring each concept to life, Will uses a workflow of three specialized software programs: beginning with a 3D model of the stage, enhancing it with realistic textures, and finally rendering photo-realistic visuals under simulated spotlight conditions, a key detail, since all productions are performed in the evening.
We’re proud to recognize Will for his thoughtful, dedicated contributions to the performing arts.
