One year later, we received this email.
“After the house was completed and we moved in, we discovered dramatic features about the design that surprised us. For example, after about a year we noticed that during certain times over the year, the full moon is dramatically centered and slowly rises perfectly in our 22-foot-tall front dining room window; the amount of awe and amazement that we experience from this ‘design experience’ is incredible. We now turn down the lights and enjoy a glass of wine to experience this cosmic effect several times of year. It is a celebration of the house!
We remembered the discussion about how our home was designed exactly to the axis of the compass and did not really understand how it might affect the way we would live. When we told Gary about our discovery, he said he was waiting to see if we would see the effect on our own. We can now see how every square foot of the house, its interiors and landscape reflect keen attention to detail, and all connect together… its genius.”

How did we do it?

When we design a project we are very attuned to the nuances of the site and the landscape. We are always thinking about the views and the experiences that we can strategically design which will bring magic to space. The codes allow us a lot of opportunities to plan large glass walls that face north and east where the solar heat gain through the glass is low. We know the sun rises every morning from the east. This is always dramatic, but we also knew that a full harvest moon rising would be an event…a true experience where we could frame and focus the view of the moon in the window. Like looking through a giant telescope, we envisioned the moon reflecting off the glass dining room table, softly glowing into the main spaces of the home- spotlighting the interiors magically. We calculated the timeline for the moonrise and the angles of the light and then left the effect to be discovered by our clients…
