What does it mean to lose everything—and still choose to stay?
What does it look like to rebuild not just a house, but a life?

Janiga's Family Photo
The Janiga Family
A beautiful day, and everyone together. This is what home is all about.

This is the story of a family whose life changed in an instant. Their home, nestled near a quiet river in the foothills, was more than just a building—it was the heart of their daily life, filled with meaning, memory, and deep connection to place. One night, a house fire reduced everything to ash. The devastation was total. But even in the wake of unimaginable loss, they made a choice that would define everything that came next: they decided not to leave.

The Janigas’ home during the fire—an unforgettable turning point.
Inside the damage—what the Janigas came home to after the fire.

Instead of starting over somewhere new, they stayed. For over six months, they lived in camper trailers on the site, surrounded by the echoes of what was and the rawness of what remained. The land held memories—birthday parties, quiet mornings, the rhythm of family life—and even in ruin, it still offered something sacred. In the simplicity of this transitional life, they discovered a different kind of richness: time together, perspective, resilience. Through discomfort came clarity. Through stillness came strength.

Home for over Six Months—where the Janigas stayed while beginning the process of rebuilding.

As the charred remains of their former home were cleared, the process was not just physical—it was emotional. It marked a turning point, a quiet release of the past, and an opening to what might come next. The site, once filled with loss, became a blank canvas for something new. But this wasn’t about recreating what had been. It was about honoring what mattered most: their connection to each other, and to the land itself.

Clearing the Way
The remains of the Janigas’ home being carefully demolished—making space for a new beginning.

Walking the site again with fresh eyes, they began to see it differently. The soulful beauty of the river, the views of the secluded canyon, the shifting light across the foothill landscape—all of it offered direction. In the quiet aftermath of loss, they found something they hadn’t expected: a sense of possibility. They had never imagined building a house. But now, they were being given a rare chance—to create something deeply personal, shaped not just by memory but by their future. What began as tragedy became an unexpected invitation. And what once felt impossible slowly revealed itself as a dream they hadn’t known they had. A home rooted in intention, grace, and deep belonging.

Back to Bare Earth
What was once a home is now an open canvas—ready for the Janigas’ next chapter to take shape.

This isn’t just a story about rebuilding a house. It’s a story about transformation. About how, after everything bad that happens to them, there is often something good waiting ahead—something they can’t yet see. About choosing to stay when it would have been easier to walk away. About allowing heartbreak to make room for something more meaningful. And about how design, at its best, can carry forward what was lost—and help shape a life that’s even more true. What if the future you never planned turns out to be the one that was meant for you all along?
